Mapping the education sector in Afghanistan

Afghanistan’s history of protracted conflicts has taken an extremely heavy toll on its institutions and basic services. Among these education is one of the most affected. The extremely poor quality of education dispensed in remote and rural areas discourages parents from placing a high priority on sending their children to school, particularly in the case of girls. ATR conducted for Helvetas an intensive desk based review as well as 17 bi-lateral interviews in order to conduct an analysis of the overall education policy and strategy of the government of Afghanistan, assessing the ongoing support to the sector and the effectiveness of major programs and best practices. The culmination of the research was a comprehensive set of recommendations for the education strategy of project partners.
