Media Monitoring Services on Justice Issues in Afghanistan (UNDP)

Afghanistan’s media sector has experienced exponential growth over the past decade. Despite significant challenges, the media sector plays a major role in shaping and directing public perception. Notably, in the absence of public interest groups and with a fledging civil society, media in Afghanistan is a major driver of demand for access to justice services. ATR consulting conducted a rigorous qualitative and quantitative study in four provinces (Kabul, Balkh, Nangarhar & Herat) to create a comprehensive ‘map’ of the media landscape as it relates to justice and human rights. The map included a comprehensive monitoring of different media to ascertain which issues received the most coverage in what areas, and analyze the different factors that influence media content. The culmination of findings were used to inform the design of a communication strategy developed in conjunction with the Ministry of Justice’s Public Legal Awareness Unit, to more efficiently use the media to engage with the public and increase knowledge of justice and human rights in Afghanistan.
